Product Description

Biotene Veterinarian Drinking Water Additive is a flavorless, concentrated, and convenient water additive for a healthy, effective, and easy way to keep your pet's teeth clean without the headache of brushing them. It is an enzymatic drinking water additive that provides daily oral protection and keeps maintenance to the minimum. It contains the lactoperoxidase enzyme system, lysozyme, lactoferrin, and a newly patented mutanase plus dextranase enzyme system for plaque removal.

Biotene Drinking Water Additive contains Lactoperoxidase, which is an enzyme that is often used for treatment of paradentosis and gingivitis and functions as a natural antibacterial agent. The additive also contains Lysozyme, a naturally-occurring enzyme that is found in egg whites, and destroys the cell walls of some bacteria, acting as a mild antiseptic. It is often used as a toothpaste and a mouth rinse to help reduce oral bacteria because it fights against the acid produced by that bacteria. Lactoferrinan, an iron-binding protein, is also included, and works against antimicrobial activity by withholding iron from the bacteria and fungi that collect in the mouth.

Mutanase is included to help break down water-insoluble glucans, adherents made up of glucose, that are present in dental plaque. Dextranase is effective in the removal of bacteria on certain plaque.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cat owners: My cats didn't balk at this!, February 8, 2011

Cats notoriously hate water and food additives. The feline smelling capacity is something like 1000x more acute than humans, so they'll turn their nose at anything.

My Persian-Himalayans are sisters with very different personalities. One will eat anything, while the other refuses most everything. When I saw the "flavorless" label on this, I was hoping the manufacturer wasn't lying.

I've been putting a half-squirt in their water dish, and no problemo! They didn't shudder and run away, so that's good. They both are fine with it. I was expecting that they'd despise this, but I lucked out. While I don't know what your cats will think, I can tell you that my cats are pickier than other cats we know (and love).

I will post here again in a few months about the efficacy. I'm trying to prevent expensive dental treatments, so we'll see if this helps. My cats will NOT let me examine their teeth, so there's no way for me to tell how well this is working right now... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Positive Effects of using Biotene Drinking Water Additive for Dogs, November 23, 2010

Upon the advice of a Dental Veterianian I have used Bitotene Water Additive for 8 months on my toy breed dogs.Toys build up plaque quicker than larger breeds.. I followed instructions, keeping a container made up in the fridge with enough to last 24 hours. My 7 month old Italian greyhound puppy has snow white teeth..plaque free. My older IG has no plaque build up nor my other 2 toy dogs. I have a 4 year old chihuahua staying here for conditioning and I could barely see her teeth 2 months ago..it just took a few minutes of scaling to remove what little plaque was left. I also use other Biotene dental products and brush regularly on my own dogs..but with the "guest" chihuahua the decrease in plaque build up is solely due to the use of the Biotene Water Additive.
Biotene Water Additive is cost effective.. the 4 oz. bottle lasts me 3-4 months for 4-5 toy dogs.I am immensely pleased with this product and highly recommend dog owners..especially toy breeds... use it regularly... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Working Great, June 28, 2011

I have 3 small dogs and the annual dental cleaning costs were breaking me. I decided to try this additive and have now been using it for about 5 months. The two dogs that had their teeth cleaned earlier this year are still bright and shiny. The tarter on the third dog is falling back. I'm going to continue use this product.

It's easy to remember too! One pump shot in their water bowl every time I fill it up. While not inexpensive, I think the biotene additive will pay for itself many times over.
